Building a DIY cornhole set is a fun weekend project and a great addition to any backyard, tailgate or picnic. Start by laying out the two sides of your boards on flat ground and connecting them using 2 1/2 wood screws. Make sure to drill pilot holes before driving screws into the wood to prevent splitting. This step is especially important if your plywood is a little bit wider than a standard 2′ x 4′ panel (some are actually 3′ x 8′).
After you’ve connected the side and back boards, drill a hole for a 3/8″ carriage bolt on one end of each leg. Add a washer on each side of the bolt and tighten the nut to secure it. The longer side of the leg should be facing up, and the overall board height should measure 12″ vertically off the ground.
Now that the boards are assembled, it’s time to sand and paint your masterpieces. This will help protect your boards from the elements and ensure they’re ready for outdoor use. If you choose to use a stain instead of paint, be sure to test a small area first to make sure it won’t discolor or fade over time.
