The bean bag gun is a new weapon that law enforcement agencies across the country have started using. These bright orange weapons are designed to be a less lethal alternative to standard shotguns.
The bean bag rounds are fired at hundreds of feet per second and are meant to stun individuals for a short period of time. However, these projectsiles have been known to cause serious injuries.
In addition, the round has the potential to kill if hit in the wrong place. For example, Levi Ayala, a 16-year-old boy, was shot in the head with a bean bag round in Austin, Texas.
While less-lethal rounds are effective at dispersing crowds, they can also cause fatal injuries. This is especially true when used to hit vital organs.
Many of these incidents have resulted in independent investigations and lawsuits. There have been court orders to change policies.
The Independent Investigations Office, a civilian-led police oversight agency, has declined to comment on the details of Chris Amyotte’s death. But his cousin wants more information. He said the Vancouver Police Department “failed to answer our questions regarding whether or not he was armed.”
The Oakland Police Department, for example, has been sued by James Chanin for firing wooden dowels and bean bag rounds during a 2003 protest. His family has demanded changes to the department’s policies.
Those same less-lethal rounds have been used to shoot into the crowd at the Occupy Oakland protests. One person was killed, one was injured, and many more were merely bruised.
