How to Build a Home Depot Cornhole Set

Cornhole is one of the classic summertime lawn games, enjoyed by kids and adults alike. It’s a relaxing game, low-key enough to enjoy while sipping a soda or beer. You can buy an official cornhole set, but it’s easy to make your own with a few supplies and a little time. This step-by-step guide will show you how to build a set of regulation-sized boards.

Start by making the frame for the board. Lay the 2x4s out on a flat surface and connect them with wood screws, using the template as a reference (video above). You can also use a Kreg Jig for a quicker project. This method will save you from filling in screw holes with putty later.

The next step is to sand and stain the board to give it a professional finish. This will protect the wood from the elements. If you plan to keep the boards outdoors, it’s best to use outdoor paint or stain.

When the boards are finished, mark the center of the hole on both sides of the box. The hole should be 6 inches wide, centered 9 inches from the top of the board.

The boards are placed 27 feet apart, with the players starting at board 1. The team/player that scores in a frame pitches first in the next frame. Any bag that lands in the circle of the hole is worth 1 point, while a bag that passes through the hole in the board is worth 3 points. The first team to 21 points wins the game.
