If you have ever watched a group of football-lovers gather around a set of boards to toss bean bags, then you have probably seen the game known as cornhole. This popular outdoor game has a few different names, but the rules and scoring are generally the same across all variations.
Whether you play with friends at your backyard barbecue or tournament-style at local bars, this game is fun for players of all ages and skill levels. Unlike horseshoes, it is easy to transport and setup at your next tailgate party or family gathering. The goal is to win by getting a bag on the board or in the “blind hole” (aka the cornhole) before your opponent gets 21 points.
The name of the game reflects its original material — corn was once used to fill the bags that were thrown at the boards. But as times changed and people switched to using a synthetic material for the bags, the name stayed. It is also possible to use other types of filling, such as rice. The game is played on boards that are about thirty feet apart (for adults) and 10 ft. apart (for kids).
The most common way to play the game is for two teams of equal players to compete against each other. Each team should designate a color of bags. Then, each player takes turns throwing the bags onto the board and into the hole. One point is awarded to a bag that lands on the board, while three points are given to a bag that makes it through the hole.
